Earth Month: What's the Big Deal?

Updated: Aug 24

Tropical Sunset Travel Logo with the words Malama Honua

Earth month started in 1969 after a massive oil spill in California. Activists brought the world together to support environmental protection.

Earth Day is meant to inspire us to do our part in making Earth more green. What started in California is now celebrated in over 190 countries on April 22 each year.  Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of environmental laws that include the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Education Act and the Clean Water Act.

Earth Day is celebrated around the world in many different ways. I encourage you all to get out into your communities and do you part to help save Earth and restore it to its natural beauty. Not sure on where to begin? It can be as simple as cleaning up litter in your neighborhood, along the roadways, and in your lakes and rivers. You can help local groups plant crops or even host a clothing swap.

Traveling eco-conscious is also very important. Not just in the month of April, but all year round. As we strive to learn our impact on the planet, we have to be mindful of the footprint we leave behind.  Traveling eco-consciously involves making mindful choices to minimize your environmental impact while exploring the world. Begin by opting for sustainable transportation methods such as trains, buses, or bicycles whenever possible, as they emit fewer greenhouse gases compared to airplanes or cars. Prioritize accommodations that have green certifications or eco-friendly practices, such as energy-efficient lighting, recycling programs, and water conservation measures. Pack lightly to reduce fuel consumption during transportation and choose reusable or biodegradable products instead of single-use plastics. Respect the local environment and wildlife by staying on designated trails, avoiding littering, and supporting conservation efforts through responsible tourism activities. Choose local, organic, and seasonal foods to reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation and support local economies. Finally, offset your carbon emissions by participating in carbon offset programs or donating to environmental organizations working towards sustainability. By adopting these practices, you can enjoy enriching travel experiences while minimizing your ecological footprint.

Where you travel is just as important as how you travel. Eco-tourism destinations offer travelers the opportunity to explore stunning natural landscapes while promoting conservation and sustainable practices. One such destination is Costa Rica, renowned for its diverse ecosystems, including rainforests, volcanoes, and coastal areas. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking through lush jungles, spotting wildlife in protected reserves like Tortuguero National Park, and participating in community-based eco-tours that support local conservation efforts.

Another eco-tourism gem is Iceland, where travelers can witness breathtaking scenery, geothermal wonders, and pristine wilderness. Highlights include exploring the dramatic landscapes of Thingvellir National Park, marveling at the powerful geysers and hot springs of the Golden Circle, and embarking on eco-friendly whale watching tours along the coastline.

In Southeast Asia, the island of Borneo offers unparalleled biodiversity and opportunities for eco-conscious travel. Travelers can discover the ancient rainforests of Danum Valley Conservation Area, encounter orangutans in their natural habitat at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, and support sustainable community initiatives in traditional villages.

Additionally, the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador are a prime destination for eco-tourism, offering unique wildlife encounters and pristine marine environments. Visitors can snorkel with sea lions, observe giant tortoises in their natural habitat, and learn about ongoing conservation efforts aimed at preserving this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

These eco-tourism locations not only provide unforgettable experiences for travelers but also contribute to the protection of fragile ecosystems and local communities, making them ideal destinations for those seeking sustainable and responsible travel options.

I like the word “Mālama.” It means take care for and protect in Hawaiian. Malama Honua serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of caring for our planet and working together to create a more sustainable and harmonious world for current and future generations. So Malama Honua, take care of earth.
